An Oyster Bay lifeguard who has served more than 50 years on the job was honored Friday at Tobay Beach.
John McGovern signed on as a seasonal lifeguard in 1967 when he was 19 years old and shows no signs of stopping.
Officials say he has saved "countless" lives over the years, but it's just "part of the job" to McGovern.
"I work with great people that motivate me," says the 68-year-old. "I try to stay strong all year long."
McGovern was recognized by Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino during a ceremony at the Ocean Beach Pavilion. He said he was humbled and extremely honored.
