News 12 Long Island's Caroline Flynn was live in Islandia where many said they are looking forward to change and have anxiously awaited this historic day.
“I think Joe Biden brings confidence, experience, empathy, and I think with Kamala Harris beside him, they will do a great job! And I'm just looking forward to starting a new day,” says one Long Islander.
News 12 also spoke with a historian from Great Neck with a passion for presidential history.
Ken Grossman just wrote the book, “Musings of a History Teacher.”
Grossman expressed how important it is to remember that while the inauguration looks different with social distancing and lots more security than we have seen at previous inaugurations in our lifetime, it is a process that has continued since 1789, no matter what is going on in the world or at home our democracy moves constantly every four or eight years. Several things looked different and felt different, including the outgoing president's absence. It's been 150 years since the last time it happened, when Andrew Johnson skipped the inauguration of Ulysses S. Grant.
It also happened at the beginning of our nation's history when the second president, John Adams refused to go to the inauguration of his former best friend, Thomas Jefferson.
