In the wake of the Valentine's Day snowstorm, icy roads and cold temperatures have caused donations at Long Island Blood Services to decrease significantly.
Long Island Blood Services official Harvey Scheffler says the blood banks are at unprecedented emergency levels. According to Scheffler, 50 to 60 people normally donate blood at the Walt Whitman Road center every day. About half those chairs have been empty since the storm. Scheffler says he'd like to have a 5 to 7-day supply, but only has a 3 to 5-day supply at the moment.
Anyone healthy enough to donate blood is asked to schedule an appointment with Long Island Blood Services.
