The Long Island Rail Road says a vehicle struck one of the gates at the School Street crossing in Westbury -- the site of a triple fatal crash involving an SUV and two trains.
The railroad says a driver crashed into the gate Monday morning, leading to some delays. Crews have repaired the damage.
Two weeks ago, a driver and two passengers were killed when police say their SUV evaded the Street Street crossing gates and was hit by two trains, obliterating the vehicle and causing it to catch fire. Police tape from then still lies on the sidewalk.
Kewesi Henry, who works in the area and often crosses over the tracks on his bicycle, says people are too impatient at the crossing.
Valeria Ranchos, of Westbury, says she's shocked another crash happened so soon after the deadly collision.
The School Street grade crossing is set to be replaced as part of the LIRR's third track initiative. Construction is set to begin in spring 2020, but sources tell News 12 that the LIRR is now looking to expedite the project.
