The Lindenhurst community came
together Sunday to help the family of a young boy battling brain cancer.
Vickie Ramos owns Vickie's Casa del Sabor, a popular empanada shop in
Lindenhurst. However, she’s had to shut the family business down since her
7-year-old son Dominick was
diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain and spinal cancer.
Friends and customers worked together to start a fundraiser
to help the family as they face tough times.
“We are just trying to
help out the best we can so that the business stays a float while they
are closed,” says Stephanie Lennon, of Lindenhurst.
The theme of the event
was “DomStrong,” inspired by the 7-year-old’s favorite superhero Iron Man.
“He has
been really resilient, he's home on hospice, but he is fighting every single
day,” says Christine
Collado, Dominick’s aunt.
Organizers say their efforts
started as a simple bake sale before it turned into a large fundraising event.
“It
exploded in two weeks…we have over 150 prizes, we also have a silent auction
going on,” Lennon says.
Longtime customer
Shelia Erickson says she would do anything to help a family who has done so
much for the community.
“Her family have touched the
hearts and stomachs of everyone in this town,” Erickson says.
Ramos says, “It’s honestly humbling. It’s more than what we would have imagined.”
For those who want to help but couldn’t make it
to the event, a
GoFundMe was set up for Dominick and his family.
