A Lindenhurst woman whose daughter was diagnosed with cancer believes a nearby radio tower is the cause.
WNYG 1440 AM's tower stands directly across the street from Cyndi Poeggel's home. Doctors discovered last Christmas Eve that Poeggel's 4-year-old daughter, Jackie, had leukemia. Jackie is undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
"Thanks to this wonderful tower, this is my daughter's childhood," Cyndi Poeggel said. "You should not have towers in a residential area."
Next-door neighbor Annamarie Prestigiacomo, whose father lives with her and also has cancer, said the frequencies are so strong that WNYG's signal plays through her iPod speakers when the iPod isn't attached.
However, Dr. Mark Weinblatt of the Cancer Center for Kids said research has been conducted on the incidence of cancer near towers.
"The overwhelming evidence in the larger studies have shown no link," he said.
News 12 Long Island reached out to the radio station, but it declined comment.
