New York state parole officers visited 130 convicted sex offenders across Long Island Saturday in an effort to keep children safe during Halloween.
According to a veteran parole officer who asked not to be identified, there are many misconceptions about sex offenders. He says the percentage of criminals who snatch children off the street is small.
"You have pedophiles who've abused young kids," he says, "but you also have guys who were 19 years old and had a 16-year-old girlfriend."
However, parent Debra Chomicki, of Syosset, says she doesn't believe sex offenders can be reformed.
"I don't think they should be paroled because they're always repeat offenders," she says.
