Dozens of students rallied Friday outside Lawrence High School in protest of the district's decision to cancel the sports season.
Students say some of the sports, like indoor track, could have been played safely. They say the cancellation could put their college applications and even possible scholarships in jeopardy.
School district officials say they hope spring sports will be played, but some students say that's not enough.
"When we go to college, we're expected to obtain leadership qualities, you know, proactiveness and be these type of leaders ready for society and how can we prepare for that when we didn't even obtain these qualities in high school," says senior Daniela Andrade. "We're gonna go to college, completely lacking all the skills we need to succeed."
The Uniondale School District has also canceled its winter sports because of the pandemic.
On Friday, the
New York State Public High School Association announced that all 2021 Winter State Championships and high-risk sports are postponed. The sports affected include basketball, boys' lacrosse, competitive cheerleading, football, ice hockey, volleyball and wrestling.
Lawrence Athletic Director Christian Paulino says he and the school board had to no choice but to cancel winter sports, but said delayed fall sports and possibly spring sports would not be canceled as of now.
"Pushing back or not having the spring will be really detrimental that's why we want to maintain that we are hopeful," says Paulino.
