State lawmakers Monday held a public hearing to discuss a proposal that would designate Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk an official wildlife refuge.
The proposal came about mainly to ban boaters from geese hunting out on the water.
Neighbors say they often hear gunshots from hunters' rifles in an area where children and families are.
"Since the 1980s, 10 people were killed and 118 were injured in hunting accidents in Connecticut," said Fran Silverman, of Friends of Animals.
The proposal would designate the beach as a wildlife refuge, banning all hunting, but keep beaches and the playgrounds open to the public.
However, proponents of the plan say they are worried about geese returning to the park and leaving behind a mess if the bill gets passed.
