A federal judge rejected the $3.5 million bail package Monday for a Muttontown couple accused of enslavement.
Judge Thomas C. Platt called the security measures for Varsha and Mahender Sabhnani's house arrest, which were agreed to by defense attorneys and prosecutors, "unsatisfactory."
"Make it as if it were a jail, not a country club," Platt ordered.
As part of the bail package, the defendants would pay for the electronic monitoring and guards to be placed at their home around the clock. Platt, however, insisted they pay the money up front.
A defense attorney for the Sabhnanis said the judge's reaction to the package was not altogether unexpected. He said conditions for his clients' bail are complicated and they understand the delay.
The Sabhnanis, who run a multi-million dollar perfume business, are accused of forcing two Indonesian women to work as slaves.
Another bail hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
