Residents in the Nassau County community of Lakeview say their drinking water is brown.

New York American Water, which services Lakeview, says it has received reports of discoloration from people in Lakeview and its surrounding area.

Company President Brian Bruce tells News 12 that iron in water is not a health hazard, and that its water meets or exceeds the standards set by the Nassau Health Department. 

According to American Water, a well on Chataqua Avenue services more than 3,000 homes in Lakeview. It is also the site of an iron-removal treatment plant where the iron will be filtered out and stored in large containers.

That plant will be open by the end of the month, and American Water plans to construct eight additional iron-removal plants by the end of 2021.

Bruce says the plants will be placed in areas with the most need, which worries Nassau Legislator Siela Bynoe. She represents the Second District and says she wants her constituents to be diligent in reporting every problem to the water company.
