Highway crews were out in force Friday night to salt and sand Long Island roads.
Trucks from the Town of Brookhaven plowed out the remaining slush from streets  in East Setauket and laid down a salt-sand mixture.
Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro says crews were treating the roads through the evening to prevent slippery conditions.
“What we're loading into the trucks is a mixture of salt and sand. Because when you get down around 15 degrees, salt will stop melting that water. So, the sand mixed in will provide traction,” he says. “We want to make sure we don't have a situation where people don't have traction in their vehicles and lose control.”
Trucks in the Town of Smithtown were also out Friday night responding to reports of icy roads.
