A former Hauppauge High School choir director was sentenced Thursday for sexually abusing a teenager while he slept.
Mark Kimes was given time served with 10 years of probation. He pleaded guilty to sexual assault in February. Suffolk officials say he will also have to meet sex offender conditions, although his sex offender status has not yet been determined.
Kimes abused a 16-year-old boy at his home in Moriches in 2017. Prosecutors say Kimes gave alcohol to the victim and allowed the victim to smoke marijuana in his home.
The boy's parents -- who wish to remain anonymous -- say this is a step in the right direction, but it does not give closure.
"He wanted to be a music teacher," they said. "He wanted to be like him. He wanted to be like his music teacher in elementary school, too, but now he says, 'Mom, I can't. I can't. It's been destroyed for me.'"
A permanent order of protection was also issued for the victim.
