There's a new push to get Long Island homeowners to use more environmentally friendly fertilizers.

The group “I Love Long Island” has launched a website that is educating homeowners about harmful pesticides and high-nitrogen fertilizers.

The group is also asking residents to stop using the chemicals that are linked to toxic algae blooms and massive fish kills.

Doug Wood, of I Love Long Island, says it is important that homeowners talk to their landscapers about what they are putting on their lawn.

“It's easy to do - it doesn't cost any more, it is something on Long Island that everyone has a responsibility to do,” he says.

Mike Lamberti's family's landscape business, Bayles Garden Center in Port Washington, decided years ago to stop using poisons and chemicals on their customers lawns. Lamberti says the company has been providing their customers with organic lawn and garden products for the past 20 years.

“We all have families. We all have kids. We live on Long Island. It’s our responsibility to take care of it,” says Lamberti.
