Some grocery store chains are offering their employees a cash incentive to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
Grocery chains like Aldi and Lidl have decided to give their works two hours of paid time off for each dose of the vaccine that they receive.
Grocery employees have been deemed essential workers and continued to work throughout the pandemic. Employees say that they often work with a lot of members of the public and sometimes find it hard to maintain social distance, so it is a good idea.
Aldi’s CEO Jason Hart says that he wants to remove obstacles for any worker who wants the vaccine. He said in statement, "Providing accommodations so employees can receive this critical vaccine is one more way we can support them and eliminate the need to choose between earning their wages and protecting their well-being."
Since the vaccine requires two doses, workers would get a total of four hours of pay – an offer that may be appealing to those who were not planning on getting the vaccine.
“I’m not 100% sure about it and the effects and everything that comes with it. It is definitely something to think about,” says one employee.
Trader Joe’s and Dollar General are offering similar benefits for workers who mingle with customers. Lidl is going even further by offering a flat $200 payment for workers who get the vaccine.
CEO Johannes Fieber says, "We are proud to provide our employees the resources they need to receive the COVID-19 vaccine free of any obstacles."
The idea is that not only will this keep employees healthy, it will also keep staffing levels steady, allowing stores to remain open.
None of the stores have made vaccination mandatory. Many of the workers earn less than $15 per hour.
