A new COVID-19 testing initiative is underway in a Suffolk town that has been hit hard by COVID-19.
The high number of positive coronavirus cases in Brentwood is just one of the reasons the Town of Islip is partnering with Good Samaritan Hospital to open a free, drive-thru testing site at the Brentwood Recreation Center.
"Consistently throughout this whole pandemic, the numbers in the community, the hamlet of Brentwood, have been consistently higher than any other hamlet in our county," says Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
The site is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. You have to call to schedule an appointment, walk-ins are not accepted.
Information will be given in English or Spanish. The test is a nasal swab, and the entire process takes about 10 minutes.
Results will take three to four days. Those who test positive will receive a phone call, while those who test negative get a letter in the mail.
The drive-up site will book 50 appointments a day, and is expected to be open through the end of January.
For those who come out to the testing site, health care workers say they will take the opportunity to engage with members of the community about wearing masks, social distancing and frequent hand washing.
To book an appointment, call 631-376-4444.
