Four gas stations in Nassau County are charged Monday with selling bootleg gas.
Officials say the stations received untaxed deliveries containing toxic MTBEs, which is illegal in New York. The stations were all fined, with the highest fine being $37,000. One of the stations, Express gas on Jericho Turnpike in Mineola, is now out of business. In addition to the bootleg charges, Nassau County Consumer Affairs investigators claim one of the pumps at the station was leaking fuel into the ground.
