We'll fire up your grills this weekend. The National Barbecue Festival is taking over Eisenhower Park, and we'll give you a taste on what you can expect to preview. Meteorologist Rich Hoffins out there this morning with the preview for us. Hey, Rich. Yeah, Jen, uh perfect weekend, Father's Day weekend, grilling. Every guy loves to grill and uh we're with Ken Phelps of the National Barbecue and Grilling Association and uh you can smell a little bit of barbecue going on so far and Looks like a great event setting up. Tell us a little bit about your organization and what's gonna happen this weekend, man. So we're excited to be with the National Barbecue and Grilling Association. Our deal is real simple, man. We wanna make sure that anybody's in the barbecue world has a better experience doing it whether they're a superstar, you know, writing cookbooks and all that stuff you see on TV or the backyard guy beating out some ribs or uh pork butts on the weekend, so. And uh so this is uh first time here in a while absolutely man so uh National Barbecue festival started back in my hometown in Douglas, Georgia back in the early 2000s, um, a way to give back for my mom and dad actually helped start it there as a community effort, so, uh, now. Barbecue festival has always been about community bringing the community together. Nothing better to do that than barbecue. I mean that's our nation's history started with people gathering around for, uh, eating barbecue to, uh, get the community together. So, uh, we wanna continue that as we go through the day and uh we're excited to be here in Long Island. Um, first time in 10 years we've actually done the event. Um, my dad passed in 2013, so we kind of took a break from it, but man, this is the perfect, perfect chamber of commerce weather the facilities here in Nassau County, man, I can't talk enough about. And we're gonna be doing a lot more grilling, a lot more stuff later on this morning, so we're gonna give a great preview and we'll be talking more with some of the competitors for this weekend as well and hopefully we're gonna have some good weather as well.

Well this weekend you're gonna want to fire up the grills. This week at the National Barbecue festival. It's taking over Eisenhower Park, and we are giving you a taste at what you can expect there. Meteorologist Rich Hoffman is out there this morning with a preview for us. Hey, Rich, what's going on? All right, we got the smoker going and we're with the barbecue pit Boys and they have their own how to cook basically your real good barbecue here and the number one barbecue channel on YouTube. This is great. Uh, the, the smokers going, it's been going since yesterday. That's part of a good barbecue and we're at Slasher and Hans here, one of the grill masters, and, uh, tell us a little bit about, uh, the barbecue and the barbecue Pit Boys. Well, Barbecue Pit Boys have been around for 18 years, and it was started by Bob Algren, who is, uh, known on, uh, on camera as Bobby Fame. Uh, we've been doing this again, uh, starting from Bob's idea that he created on his own. He started with a small grill that he found in a junkyard. He never had any idea of doing this, but with his knowledge of uh. Putting things together, he wrapped this up and here we are, and you guys are number one barbecue sauce here. You guys have won numerous awards and we're gonna show what's going on back here with the smoker. Oh, we got some butts and we've got some uh brisket, and we've got lamb and we got handsy. Hansi, tell me a little bit about some of this other stuff that he's smoking around and how you guys cook it. Well, we woke up yesterday morning at 3 a.m. and drove. Far north to come here and we haven't slept. Well, I did. I actually slept on the ground. I mean, if I, I should have left the blankets there, but so when is this going to be ready for the season? I think about probably 3 or 4 hours from now it'll be ready like prime time for people to come and enjoy it. They'll be able to taste this all weekend long. Yes, and we apologize, but we're up all like literally all night. It's all good. We're gonna talk more with you guys throughout the morning hours. We're gonna talk about the weather, the, the, the grit, uh, grilling as well. You can come down here and check out the book for, uh, the YouTube channel as well with the barbecue Pit Boys and the weather for it today, we're OK if you want to come down. The festivals all weekend long tonight, Saturday and Sunday, and if you're gonna head out, maybe play a little golf for it today here we're looking at temperatures in the 70s.

Meteorologist Rich Hoffman's out there with a preview for us. Rich, the food before just looks so good. Oh yeah, the smoker's looking good and we're here all weekend. We're looking at for tonight through Saturday and Sunday, Father's Day weekend. Come on down, get a little barbecue starting on later on this afternoon, and we're giving you a preview. We were talking about the smoker before. Now we're Captain Ron, which I just learned out you're a Long Islander. How you get this barbecuing. Oh man, I tell you, I started working in pizzerias and Hotpog and my love for cooking. Just kind of continued and they say at 35 men get into World War II history or smoking meat. So here we are and you know you have, you're on the internet teaching people how to barbecue and everything else. What are some of the things that a beginner would have to go through? Well, so I would say the biggest thing is don't cook for time when you're cooking on a barbecue, when you're smoking meats, don't cook to time, cook to temperature. It's the biggest thing that will help any new cook in the barbecue world. And uh you know what are some of the common mistakes besides the time right, I got it on the grill. What do I need to do? Uh, everybody wants to rush. Everybody wants to rush. This is a process, man. Take it slow, take it easy, and just let the fire do its thing. It's probably the best. And what about marinating? What about? There's some, there's some different schools of thought on marinating. I'm not a big one. A lot of people do, um, generally marinates to have. A lot of sugar in them, so they will kind of tend to burn some of the meat. So I'm not a big marinade guy, but if you want to, have at it. That's something new because you're right. I notice sometimes when I do put extra stuff on it cooks a little faster in some corners. It does burn. We got your grills getting ready for this weekend. What are you going to be doing this weekend? Yes sir. So we've got 3 big green eggs that we're going to have lit up out here. We are cooking probably 10 different proteins. We're doing briskets. We're doing rib eyes, we're doing. Tomahawk steaks, fish, pork, you name it, we're cooking it. Are you giving tips too while you're cooking? I am, and they're free this week too. All right, that's, that's great. So this weekend here at Eisenhower Park we have more information about the festival on our website and hopefully we can get squeeze out some good weather. I think today is fine if you're coming down later on today through tonight for the barbecue festival, you're gonna be OK. We do have the clouds around.

Oh yeah, you can smell it, and I'm gonna post more videos and you're gonna be able to just take it in at home. It's this weekend, the National Barbecue Festival here at Eisenhower Park, and we're with some award winning teams here. One of them is the barbecue Pit Boys. They have award winning barbecue sauce. This is slasher. Tell me what's so special about this sauce. It's a winner. Yeah, apples and spiced rum. This, uh, this conglomeration of flavors, uh, hit home. And it and it works, yeah, and you won numerous awards and you know, tell me a little bit about, you know, from the, the sauce to what we got on the smoker. Well, the sauce, uh, again came through, uh, Brewer's blend also was one of the number one. Uh, sauces that we entered, uh, all of this. It's from starting 18 years ago. And we have a nice. Group like 18,000 chapters and what's Hans doing now on the grill? He is cooking the brisket and we've got the uh lamb and we've got the butts, pork butts. And everything seems to be falling together and it looks like he's putting on is that some Kansas City stuff that's that's the rub he's using, yeah, it's going to form a nice park and this weekend people will be able to come down here, taste it, see how you guys are doing and also you guys have the barbecue book as well, number one. YouTube channel for grilling the grill masters, that's greats leisure and we're gonna talk more about the festival, the weather today if you want to come down and meet these guys and get some tips as well, you'll be able to do that here at Eisenhower Park. We're looking at some dry weather today. We're going to get some breaks of sunshine coming our way as we go throughout the rest of our day.

No, Jen, not yet, but I'm learning a lot of new things so I can perfect it for Father's Day weekend, and we know that there's a lot of barbecue, but you got to be able to cook the barbecue and one of the things that we're going to do is with Matt Messer, we're gin, I'm sorry, cotton gin smokers, and I've been checking out these smokers and we've been seeing all the different things you can do. This is one of the smokers. We'll look at a few more in a second. Tell me a little bit about this smoker. Yeah, absolutely. This is the harvester smoker. It's our number one seller. And uh you can get about 15 to 20 hours of cook time out of this, uh, so enough time to cook a brisket, cook ribs, um, and uh yeah we've been around for about 5 years made right here in the USA. So, uh, Live fire and smoke.com is so is this simple where you just hang it here and the stuff on the bottom like for someone's a novice what what kind of, yeah, so you have, you have a, uh, a heat shield and a charcoal basket down below and then you have 3 different levels that you can hang your meat grate, uh, so you can put. A brisket or butts on there, but then this is your hanging system so you can hang slabs of ribs in here and cook ribs in about 2.5 hours. Any special secrets of what to cook it with underneath? lump charcoal and wood chunks mixed together. Wood chunks. All right. And then you have some other live smokers. Tell me a little about those. Yeah, so this is Aaron here. Aaron is the one who invented the tribal fire grill. And so Aaron, I'll let you talk more about that. And that's what's coming out of the smoke right now. That's right, so we've got a charcoal chimney, so these are a live fire griddle. Uh, we have the the first though is a Santa Maria style, so that rate goes up and down to control your, your, your heat, your food to the fire. Uh, it's all charcoal, uh, wood driven, and then we also have a griddle top accessory. So we kind of think of these as a Swiss Army knife of grills. There's a lot of different accessories and swinging grates that you can use to cook in a lot of different ways and you're gonna. Giving demonstrations on this this weekend. Absolutely we're going to be cooking flank steak. We're going to be cooking breakfast. We're going to be cooking all types of proteins and down to your vegetables and everything because there's so many different ways that you can cook on these grills. All right, fantastic. You can come down here this weekend, tonight, Saturday and Sunday to check out the smokers and how you're going to get some tips, all that fun stuff, and the weather Friday evening, we're looking OK. There may be a slight chance of a shower, but for the most part we're OK now the kids coming home from.

Fire up those grills this weekend. The National Barbecue Festival is taking over Eisenhower Park after a 14 year hiatus. The iconic food extravaganza is back in Nassau County. It will also feature live music, some demos, family fun, and a competition with a $100,000 prize. We spoke to a 13-year-old world junior barbecue champion about the advice that she has for those looking to learn how to barbecue. Try out different recipes and whatever hits the best, stick with it and tweak it to make it your own and because that's what we did and then once you find what works out best for you then just roll with it. The National Barbecue festival starts today and it runs through Sunday.
