Police are investigating a fatal accident on the Long Island Expressway in Melville Saturday between two trucks that left one driver dead.
Police say the driver of a dump truck, James Sefcik of North Babylon, was likely killed on impact when he slammed into an 18-wheeler along the LIE between exits 49 and 50 around 6:45 a.m. According to police, the dump truck apparently hit the rear of the semi that slowed down to exit after a tire blew out. Police say Sefcik was ejected from the truck's cab before it burst into flames and veered off the road. The impact so great the gas tank was ripped off the dump truck.
The 18-wheeler was torn open in the crash and bottles of fuel and motor oil spilled on the road. Bulldozers were brought in to clean up the mess. Sand was blasted onto the expressway to soak up the spilled oil. The stretch of highway was closed for hours. Investigators did a safety check on both rigs, which included examining the brakes. Police issued six summonses to the driver of the 18-wheeler.
