A Bellport man accused of neglecting and abusing his 10-year-old dog has been charged with animal cruelty.

Suffolk SPCA officials say 50-year-old Cecilio D. Matthews failed to provide adequate care to his mixed-breed dog, Seven.

Investigators found the dog underweight, infested with flies and suffering from multiple open wounds this month.

Officials say Seven is receiving treatment at a local animal shelter.

Matthews was issued a field appearance ticket by SPCA detectives on Monday.

He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Sept. 11.
