The federal government released its home heating outlook for the coming winter, and it doesn't look good for Long Islanders.
According to the experts, Long Island oil customers should expect to pay $40 to $50 more each month this winter and gas heat customers should expect an increase of $30 a month.
Kevin Rooney, of the Oil Institute, said crude oil prices are responsible for the rise.
"The price of crude oil, of which everything else is predicated, is up almost 34 percent over the same time last year," Rooney said.
The home heating outlook is based on predicted temperatures, demand and heating efficiency throughout the region.
