Two days before the start of the hurricane season, Long Island emergency officials and the American Red Cross are letting residents know that preparation is the best way to avert damage.
Hurricane season begins Sunday, June 1 and forecasters expect it to be unusually active. Experts say the safest ground for most on Long Island will be the middle of the island, closest to the LIE.
The Red Cross says not being prepared for a hurricane can be a disaster. For those who need to evacuate their homes, the agency recommends packing a ?Go Bag? ahead of time. It should be contain water, a battery-operated radio, flashlight, toiletries, medications and important papers.
The Red Cross has 50 shelters across the island for residents who need a place to stay. Sal Kille, of the American Red Cross, also advises bringing a pillow, extra blanket, clothes and toys for the kids.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue?s Joe Williams says Long Island is overdue for a direct hit from a hurricane. Suffolk County has 3,000 cots, blankets, pillows, shelters and generators for those in need.
FEMA will soon be sending supplies to the island as well.
