A grandmother walking two young children to school was struck by a car in a Village of Babylon crosswalk Tuesday morning, and neighbors say the intersection has been a longstanding safety concern.
Suffolk County police say a 54-year-old man was making a left turn from Ralph Avenue onto Park Avenue around 8:30 a.m. when he hit a 68-year-old woman in the crosswalk.
Exclusive surveillance video obtained by News 12 shows a crossing guard in the intersection gesturing for the driver to stop moments before the crash.
Neighbors say the woman was walking her grandchildren to Babylon Grade School and managed to push their wagon out of the way just before impact. The children were not hurt. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries not considered life threatening.
Amanda Gambino, who lives at the intersection, says residents have repeatedly asked for more safety measures.
“If there was a stop sign there, it would be safer for the community and for the kids,” Gambino said. “On weekends, there’s no crossing guard, and a lot of kids go to soccer across the street. It would give us all more peace of mind.”
Police say the driver stayed at the scene. News 12 has reached out to the Village of Babylon about calls for a stop sign or other changes at the intersection and is waiting to hear back.
