A Long Island group is working to save horses that were abandoned, neglected or bound for slaughter, and it's doing so in a unique way.

The Equine Assisted Living Project at Amaryllis Farm in Bridgehampton is letting people sponsor horses in need. For $5,000 per year, people are matched up with a horse, and the farm provides the animal with shelter, food and all the care it needs to be nursed back to health.

In return, sponsors get to visit their horse whenever they want.

The owner of the farm-turned-nonprofit has been helping horses for 23 years. She says that human connections are important for horses, and they can also better the lives of the people who adopt them.
