A Department of Transportation proposal to improve intersection safety for pedestrians is coming to fruition.
Councilman Andrew Cohen and residents have been voicing their concerns about unsafe street crossings around West 235th Street in Riverdale for years. They say the combination of speeding cars and the number of seniors in the area is a recipe for disaster, with no crosswalks for pedestrians and only two-way stops for cars.
The group asked the DOT to put in extra safety measures, including four-way stops at intersections like West 235th and Oxford streets. They say their requests were previously denied.
The city has now changed its tune and has a new proposal to present to Community Board 8. The plan does not include any four-way stops, but it does call for improvements at four key intersections.
Along 235th and 238th streets, new crosswalks would be added, ramps at corners would be ADA-accessible, and a double yellow line would be painted down the street. The councilman and people in the area say these changes are a good start and are badly needed.
The councilman wasn't clear on a timeline but says he hopes the changes will be put in place very soon.
News 12 reached out to DOT officials who confirmed that they are proposing to install enhanced crossings at those intersections.
