A new partnership aims to restore a deteriorating Long Island lighthouse.

The Stepping Stones Lighthouse, which was built in 1867, still flashes a green light to guide and navigate ship traffic on the Long Island Sound. But over the years, the historic landmark has fallen into disrepair.

The Great Neck Parks District wants to see the iconic structure preserved. Today commissioners gave control of the project to Pam Setchell, who restored the Huntington Lighthouse.

Setchell is looking for donations, federal grants and volunteers. If the lighthouse doesn't get fixed, she says the government could tear it down and replace it with a steel pole and light.

The total renovation cost could be near $4 million.
