A search is underway for a pair of suspects who stole pricey exotic snakes from a West Islip pet shop.
The theft happened on Oct. 30 at around 11:45 a.m. at BTJ's Jungle, and it was all caught on surveillance video.
Store owner Thomas Neihoff says a man and a woman -- both wearing hoodies and face coverings -- entered the store and went to the reptile area. While the couple distracted an employee, they allegedly grabbed two designer ball pythons from a cage that was unlocked for cleaning.
The tiny snakes were worth about $650 to $800 each. Suffolk police are investigating. Neihoff says even though the snakes happened to be unlocked, he believes the couple came to the store on a mission to take something since they tried to hide their car from security cameras.
"They saw a situation and they took advantage of it," Neihoff said. "They were parked down the block, two parking lots down, and I have plenty of parking in front. So it seems like it was a little premeditated."
Neihoff added he was able to identify the vehicle as a silver Nissan Altima. Employees are now worried about the health of the snakes and if they're being taken care of properly.
The owner said it "looked like he put it in his pocket and then one went into the lady's pocketbook."
"The way he grabbed the snake out of the cage, it seems like he knew what he was doing ... because he didn’t hesitate at all."
