Birth certificates will soon come with a third gender option in New York City.
Mayor Bill de Blasio signed the law yesterday.
Residents will be able to select male, female or "X" on their certificates.
The law will also make it easier for New Yorkers to change their current documents.
The law goes into effect Jan.1.
