A CVS
store designed to provide for underserved Hispanic communities opened Friday in
Central Islip.
Rebecca Sarnin, president of the Health and Welfare Council of
Long Island, says the COVID-19 pandemic unmasked the seriousness of underserved
communities of color.
“It's
an even greater issue for those who don't speak English, especially now when it
comes to getting vital health information in the middle of a pandemic,” she
told News 12.
The
Central Islip location can be found on East Suffolk Avenue. It’s expected to be
one of the first locations that has access to the COVID-19 vaccine.
Communities
of color were hit especially hard during the pandemic, constituting double the
amount of deaths related to the virus, officials say.
"They've
had less COVID testing. They have a higher infection rate. There is no
justification not to have a very aggressive outreach program for the Black and
brown community," Gov. Cuomo said on Thursday.
The
Long Island location is one of 12 Hispanic-focused stores expected to be
opened across New York and New Jersey by the end of the year.
