Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he wants 85% of nursing home residents vaccinated by the end of this week and all staff and residents to have the COVID-19 shot within the coming two weeks.
The governor says nursing home vaccinations aren't happening fast enough. He's blaming the federal supply chain for that.
"We have received around 900,000 dosages so far. We have 2.1 million health care workers and nursing home people," says Cuomo. "So nurses, doctors, nursing homes, which are the first priority 2.1 million. We haven't even received half the number of dosages yet."
COVID-19 vaccinations for nursing home staff and residents are underway, but visitors aren't allowed quite yet. Friends and family have been awaiting the day they can see their loved ones again.
"It was an initial rollout issue. Once the nursing homes did everything they needed to do on their end -- all of the paperwork -- they had to sit and wait to hear from the respective pharmacies to schedule the dates," says Stephen Hanse, of the state Health Facilities Association.
Helen Tarnaras' daughter Vasso has progressive MS and lives at the Medford Multicare Center nursing home. She couldn't see her for her birthday, so they celebrated through a glass window.
"It was fun while we were there because our goal was to make her laugh. But of course I go in the car and I cry my eyes out because I'm looking through a window and we had to send the cake inside," says Helen Tarnaras.
