A Hewlett man was arrested for allegedly leaving a hateful package at a neighbor's door around midnight.
Police say William Quigley, 52, left an antisemitic package on a Raymond Place resident's doorstep.
Before police arrested Quigley, they say the victim's 7-year-old son was startled by screaming.
News 12 is told the boy alerted his parents who then checked their home security camera video and saw Quigley leaving a package at the house.
According to court documents, the package had swastikas drawn on it and contained multiple Jewish remarks.
Court papers also show the victim reported Quigley left four unwanted packages at her house from May to October of 2022.
Neighbors say Quigley often wanders the block late at night shouting in different voices.
They tell News 12 they believe he may be suffering from mental illness.
"He doesn't belong in jail - he belongs in a hospital," says Ariella Siegel.
Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum of Temple Israel says Quigley should serve time and get help if he is convicted.
He says hate crimes, including recent cases of antisemitic flyers left on cars and driveways in Long Beach and Oceanside, should not go unchecked.
"His filter may not be there, but the feelings are there and tragically, it's in the hearts and minds of too many people," Rosenbaum says.
The victim in Quigley's case declined to comment.
Quigley is charged with harassment and stalking.
A judge issued a stay away order of protection for the victims.
