Members of the City Council say the Department of Education has failed to install GPS devices on school buses.
They say vehicles in other city agencies, such as the NYPD, FDNY and the Sanitation Department, are already outfitted with Global Positioning Systems. Elected officials say the DOE promised to install the navigational systems years ago.
The issue has garnered new attention after students of a Brooklyn charter school were trapped on a bus for hours Sept. 3 while the driver circled around aimlessly. The driver was later arrested.
Council members say a hearing is planned in which DOE officials will be asked to testify about what took place that day and why the GPS devices haven't been installed.
