A Huntington man is accused of driving the wrong way on the Long Island Expressway, crashing into a tanker Sunday.
Police say 38-year-old William McCarthy was on his way home from Long Beach when he made a wrong turn and ended up on Glen Cove Road. When he tried to get onto the LIE, he went over the overpass and started going eastbound on the westbound service road before getting onto the expressway, according to Detective Lt. Kevin Smith.
He drove past six "Wrong Way" signs and a ?Do Not Enter? sign in the process, according to police. Investigators say McCarthy collided with a sewer transplant tanker, which flipped over.
The truck driver suffered head and back injuries. McCarthy was charged with reckless endangerment, assault and other traffic violations. His license was suspended and he is being held on $2,500 bond.
