A former Hempstead resident who spent 24 years in prison had his conviction for the 1990 killing of an assistant Hofstra football coach overturned.
Gary Lawrence was accused of fatally shooting Joseph Healy on Hempstead Turnpike.
The new ruling found that authorities violated Lawrence's rights by withholding exculpatory evidence at his trial, making him the second man to have his conviction overturned in the case.
Christopher Ellis was freed from prison in 2021 after his conviction was vacated.
