Long Island Rail Road riders say they have to watch where they sit on the train because of the filth surrounding them.
Greg Malinowski, of Wantagh, says he sees trash like napkins and food containers "all over the place." Sal DeLuca, also of Wantagh, adds coffee stains, sticky floors and alcohol to the mix.
Pictures taken by commuters show beer cans, coffee cups, leftover food on seats and overflowing bathrooms.
A couple of months ago, the LIRR promised to keep trains clean after complaints by riders. The LIRR says that even though it's under financial constraints, it has increased the number of car cleanings per day by 5 percent.
The LIRR says it's also pursuing a campaign to remind customers to dispose of their trash at platform receptacles.
"Ridership at historically high levels places great demands on our system," an MTA spokesperson said in a statement. "We are meeting those demands with a diverse set of responses and we continue to look at new ways to improve further."
Some passengers say it's up to each rider to put their trash in the garbage can once they leave the train.
The LIRR says it added 100 hand sanitizers to bathrooms and scaled back the distribution of its marketing material on train seats.
