Community comes together for Youth Empowerment Expo
The third annual Youth Empowerment Expo was held at the Central Islip Recreation Center Saturday, where young people from the Brentwood and Central Islip communities gathered for some fun.
There were exhibits, sports, games and performances. Teens also got the chance to learn about employment opportunities, and speak with police officers about the important work they do in the community.
The event had special meaning for some in the area, which has been rocked by gang violence and slayings.
Parents like Ayesha Bright, who brought her four children, say it was a learning opportunity.
"I want my kids to know what's going on in their community and how everyone is trying to get together, and that it's not all bad," Bright says.
