If you’ve ever tried to find a parking spot in Long Beach, you know how tough it can be.
City officials say they’re taking steps to address the issue — and they’re starting by listening to the people who deal with it every day.
On Monday evening, residents are gathering for the third and final community workshop hosted by the City of Long Beach.
The goal: to come up with practical short- and long-term solutions to the city’s growing parking problem — a problem that locals say has been getting worse for years.
“It’s always been rough," Long Beach resident Rocco Zeoli Jr. said. "Especially in the summertime."
City Manager Dan Creighton acknowledged that the root of the problem is simple: there just aren’t enough spaces.
“Really it’s a lack of supply,” Creighton said. “Everything is supply and demand oriented. We have very few parking spots available but a lot of people who drive — and more people driving today than 20 years ago.”
Creighton noted that the city does have ideas to improve the situation, but he emphasized that resident input is a key part of the process.
“It’s good they’re at least trying to come up with something,” Zeoli said. “Better than not doing anything.”
Following the workshop, engineers will begin developing a parking strategy based on community feedback. City officials say the final plan — which will include both short-term and future improvements — is expected to be released by the end of the year.
The City of Long Beach is asking residents to take a parking survey, which can be found here.
