U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced an upgraded version of the naturalization civics test. Immigrant advocates and community leaders are urging residents to apply now before the new rules take effect on Oct. 18.

Under the current exam, applicants prepare by studying 100 civics questions. During the interview, an officer selects up to 10 questions, and applicants must answer at least six correctly to pass.

The new exam will expand the study material and raise the passing requirement. Applicants will face a larger set of questions, with officers asking up to 20. Twelve correct answers are required to succeed.

Community organizations warn that the new version will be more challenging and could create additional barriers for immigrants seeking citizenship.

Local leaders point to the story of 97-year-old Juana Carcano, who recently fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a U.S. citizen. They say her success is proof that it can be done at any age, and now is the time to act.

Assembly Member George Alvarez and his office are offering free resources and support to Bronx residents preparing their applications. Eligible individuals are encouraged to begin the process immediately in order to qualify for the current version of the exam.
