? A cab driver was fatally shot outside the Shirley train station early Tuesday morning, marking the second slaying of a cabbie on Long Island since the weekend.
Police were called to the scene in Shirley at approximately 3 a.m. in response to a 911 call. A man, who did not wish to appear on camera or be identified, says he heard gunshots and saw two black men running away from the scene, one in a brown hooded sweatshirt and the other in a black hooded sweatshirt.
Shortly after, the witness saw the driver open the door of his cab and fall out. He then called 911. The man did not wish to be identified for fear of retribution, stating that gang activity is high around the train station.
The victim, 53-year-old John Attrino, of Shirley, died at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. The company he worked for, the Hampton Coach Company, says he leaves behind a wife and a sister.
On Saturday, another cab driver was shot in Elmont. Police say Michael Xavier was robbed and shot by men he picked up in New Hyde Park.
Police urge anyone with information on the Shirley case to call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. Those with information on the Elmont murder can call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
