Over 100 businesses signed up, but only five entrepreneurs made it to the BX-Factor competition finals at Yankee stadium on Thursday.
"It is a different kind of pitch. Just the best way to say it at the 'Cathedral of Baseball'" said Rob Walsh, president of the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation.
The best pitch walked away with $10,000, and it's all in honor of Bronx Week 2024. The competition's goal is to uplift Bronx businesses that have faced challenges in accessing funding.
"Small businesses do that. They create local jobs, career pathways. They stimulate the economy. And during the pandemic, they kept their doors open to struggles and challenges," said Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson.
Gomez Design Studio took the big prize home. The studio focuses on creating sustainable bespoke furniture using only local construction waste lumber.
"Promoting the business more and more marketing initiatives, creating community events and workshops. I want to also start an apprenticeship, an internship program for women in the Bronx," said owner of Gomez Design Studio, Tiffany Gomez.
Two other finalists, Bronx Native and Green Canvas Productions, also walked away with $2,000.
"They're all winners. Those who are investing in the Bronx, those who are making the Bronx a better place by growing jobs, by building communities. This is what we wanted to highlight on Bronx Week," said Walsh.
