(09/27/06) ROOSEVELT - Roosevelt School District told parents Wednesday it will no longer provide bus service to St. Dominic?s Parochial School, starting Monday.

State law mandates districts bus students who opt out of public education to their private school as long as that school is less than 15 miles away. A letter from the Roosevelt School District tells students their homes are farther than 15 miles from St. Dominic?s in Oyster Bay. One parent says her house is only six-tenths of a mile outside that legal limit.

The Roosevelt School District says it is in contact with the New York Department of Education and its lawyers about the matter. Parents hope the district reverses its decision, and restores bus service, when the board meets on Thursday.
