The Town of Brookhaven plans to revitalize a Yaphank lake that has been choked off by an invasive weed for years.
Civic leader Linda Peterson say Lower Yaphank Lake, also known as Lily Lake, was once a bustling area for recreation. But over the years, an invasive weed has turned the lake into a mucky waterway that can no longer sustain fishing, kayaking or ice skating.
"We are delighted that the Town of Brookhaven and our Councilman [Michael] Loguercio have put money in the budget to allow the cleanup of this wonderful resource," says Peterson.
The town has set aside $4.5 million to be used toward dredging the lake in the spring and removing the weed.
The work is set to begin in April and last until June.
