A Brentwood man was arrested Sunday night for allegedly running over his girlfriend with a car after the two got into an argument.
Police say Paulito Lorenzo, 21, and his girlfriend Yudith Garces, 22, were in a 1993 Toyota Corolla around 11 p.m. Sunday night. While Garces was driving, police say the couple began arguing because Garces told Lorenzo that he was too drunk to drive.
According to investigators, Garces parked the car on Merrill Street and began to walk away because Lorenzo had started to yelling. Lorenzo then got into the driver?s seat and began chasing Garces with the vehicle, police say. Witnesses say Lorenzo then intentionally struck Garces as she ran away.
After allegedly hitting Garces, Lorenzo drove the car into a fence at 169 Merrill Street, police say. He tried to flee on foot, but was apprehended by Third Precinct officers nearby.
Garces was taken to Southside Hospital with a broken right leg and abrasions to her arms.
Lorenzo was charged with second-degree assault and DWI charges. He pleaded not guilty to both charges Monday at the First District Court in Central Islip.
The judge set Lorenzo?s bond at $5,000 and ordered him to stay away from Garces.
