It was a deposit Rich Miller was waiting to see in his bank account.
This morning, the co-owner of Rocket Express, a small trucking company in Bay Shore, told News 12 that his bank has refunded him the $2,600 he reported as stolen after he became the latest victim of mail theft and check fraud on Long Island.
"Thank you for your help," Miller told News 12 over text today.
Miller said he mailed six checks last month for things like business utilities and health insurance.
As he usually does, he placed the letters in the outside mailbox at the Bay Shore Post Office. Within days, his bank flagged four checks that he mailed between Aug. 18 through Aug. 21 for potential fraud, but not before an alleged thief fished the mailbox outside the facility, whitewashed two checks and cashed them under the name "Derrick Johnson."
Miller had been fighting to get the money back for his business, but wanted to come forward with his story to warn others about the risks associated with using exterior mailboxes at postal facilities.
Earlier this week, a United States Postal Service spokesperson told News 12 in a statement: "The postal inspection service takes matters involving mail theft as one of their top priorities. We are working diligently with our local law enforcement partners on reports of mail thefts throughout Long Island."
Miller is not alone, a federal report from earlier this year found that check fraud is on the rise and people targeting unsupervised mailboxes outside of secured postal facilities are significantly contributing.
Suffolk County police have not yet announced any arrests in the case and told News 12 today: "The investigation is continuing."
