Babylon Village Mayor Scordino dies at 71 near Catskills home

Scordino served on the village board for more than 30 years and the past 17 years as mayor.

Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino, a well-known Long Island political figure, has died. He was 71.
According to State Police, he was found near his second home in the town of Cochecton in the Catskills. Authorities believe he suffered a heart attack.
Scordino served on the village board for more than 30 years and the past 17 years as mayor.
He is credited with overseeing the growth of Babylon into one of Suffolk's most popular downtowns.
Additional information and arrangements for services are forthcoming, according to the village’s Facebook page.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone issued a statement, calling him a “real giant in our community.”

“I have worked closely with Mayor Scordino for nearly two decades as Babylon town supervisor and now Suffolk County executive. I am shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of my friend and colleague and my thoughts and prayers are with his family today.”
