Police say an East Northport resident died in a DWI crash overnight on Jericho Turnpike in the Town of Huntington.
Authorities say the crash happened around 12:15 a.m. on Jericho Turnpike between Larkfield Road and Verleye Avenue. An Infiniti QX50 was completely destroyed, the front end of it underneath a Bartlett tractor-trailer.
The eastbound lanes of the turnpike were closed in the area until around 9 a.m.
Suffolk County police say Carlos Orellana Mata, of Bay Shore, was traveling eastbound when he drove his Infiniti into the rear of a Volvo tractor-trailer that was also traveling eastbound.
Orellana Mata's passenger, a 23-year-old Leonel Lopez, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, 38-year-old Ibrahima Doukoure of Newark, New Jersey, was not injured.
Police say Orellana Mata was treated and released from the hospital and later charged with DWI.
"The car went into that steel bar and it went like an accordion. The firemen took the jaws of life, took the hood off like a puzzle. They ripped the door," said East Northport resident Tom Fitzgibbon, who was near the scene minutes after the crash.
Residents told News 12 that the stretch of Jericho Turnpike where the crash occurred is known for being dangerous.
"People are always getting into accidents there,” said Kings Park resident Sue Ann Palma. “Speeding, texting and driving, DWIs."
"A lot of families and kids in this town. Traffic is not very safe for little babies and toddlers,” said Jessica Oster of Commack.
Manishi Mehta, the owner of a nearby 7-Eleven, says he received approval for a traffic light to be placed at the intersection where the accident took place, but it hasn’t been installed yet.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
