An audit released by the New York State comptroller Monday revealed a $6.4 million deficit in the Patchogue-Medford Union Free School District.
The four-month review, which evaluated financial statements from 2003 to 2005, found a mismanagement of funds. Superintendent Michael Mostow acknowledged mistakes were made.
"People didn't do their job properly," Mostow said.
Accounting for the deficit, the audit focused on four major shortfalls. It reports the school district didn't accurately record and report financial activities, had inadequate internal controls, functioned without a competent internal claims audit and used inadequate procurement procedures.
As recently as six to eight years ago, Mostow claimed the district was in good health and boasted of a surplus.
To get back on its feet, the district plans on taking out a $6 million bond this coming June. Mostow said he has also hired a full-time certified public accountant to better handle the district's finances.
