6 people rescued after boats took on water in separate incidents in Fire Island Inlet

Six people were rescued from two boats as they took on water in two separate incidents in the Fire Island Inlet.
Fire officials say the first one happened around 2:45 p.m. on Monday, with two people rescued. Five minutes later, another boat sent out a distress call that it too was taking on water. Four people were rescued from that boat. It eventually flipped over and sank.
The West Islip Fire Department, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, Babylon Fire Department, Bay Shore Fire Department and Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau, transported the people to the nearby Coast Guard station.
One person was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
"It's Labor Day Weekend, the last hoorah for the summer. So I know a lot of people were out there on the water today and it's good to have those resources available, God forbid something happens," said West Islip Fire Chief Robert Celeste.
