The Flanders community celebrated a beloved local tradition Wednesday night as the Big Duck lit up for the 37th year in a row, drawing crowds of families, longtime residents, and first-time visitors.
For many, the lighting marks the official start of the holiday season.
“I've always heard about the Big Duck. This is my first time here,” said Nancy Hirten. “The lighting of it is great, and it is a great way to start the holiday season.”
Others say the landmark is a can’t-miss symbol of the East End.
“If you're a North Fork girl like I am, and you're not at the Big Duck, you are missing out,” said Virginia Scudder. “It's an anomaly. Who wouldn't want it in their backyard or neck of the woods? It's fantastic, and everyone who comes here has to stop and visit.”
The celebration featured more than just the iconic structure. Santa visited to hear children’s Christmas wishes, local groups sang carols, and Irish dancers performed for the crowd.
“It's so much fun to bring Irish dance to December, Christmas time,” said Noelle Stevenson, of Flanders. “Performing for the community is a fun time.”
The event brought together kids, adults, and even pets—creating a lively atmosphere with no “fowl” play intended.
“I drive by a lot, and to see the Duck is really cool,” said Ryan O’Donnell. “I think it's important for people to come and enjoy the area.”
