Residents in Brookhaven say they are concerned they could lose their homes through eminent domain as town officials consider acquiring properties for a major redevelopment project in Mastic Beach.
The town is holding a public hearing Tuesday night on a proposal tied to the Mastic Beach Neighborhood Road Redevelopment Plan.
Among those expected to speak is homeowner Tyler Goban, who says he has been fighting to keep his property.
Goban says the town first contacted him about a year ago with an offer to purchase his property. After declining the offer and submitting a counteroffer, he says he did not hear back for several months.
Then, about two weeks ago, Goban says he received another letter notifying him that the town would consider using eminent domain to acquire his property during Tuesday night’s hearing.
According to Goban, the town plans to use his property for a parking lot as part of the larger redevelopment effort.
Renderings of the proposed project show plans for approximately 630 new homes, as well as new restaurants, retail space and other improvements throughout the area.
“I don’t think you need to acquire properties to build parking lots for condo complexes,” Goban said. “I think you can build up the community in ways residents see fit without jamming in 600 more homes.”
News 12 reached out to town supervisor Dan Panico, who said he would not comment before Tuesday night's meeting.
